elderberries!
Elderberry syrup is what most people think of when they think of elderberries. And for good reason, since it has been used for centuries to treat various ailments and promote overall health. Elderberry syrup is made from the berries of the elderberry (Sambucus nigra) plant. The berries are dark purplish-black, and they are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
Health Benefits: Elderberry syrup has immune-boosting properties due to its high levels of vitamins A and C, as well as antioxidants like anthocyanins. Some studies suggest that elderberries may help reduce the duration and severity of colds and flu.
Antioxidant Properties: Elderberries are rich in antioxidants, which can help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.
Cold and Flu Relief: Elderberry syrup can help reduce symptoms like congestion, coughing, and fever, and may help the body recover more quickly from illness.
Antiviral Properties: Some research suggests that elderberries may possess antiviral properties that inhibit the replication of certain viruses.
Elderberry syrup is made by simmering elderberries in water, usually with other immune boosting (and yummy tasting!) ingredients. After simmering, the liquid is strained, and honey is added. The syrup is then stored in the fridge.
My elderberry syrup is made with elderberries (obviously!), rosehips, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and raw honey. I also include elderberries in my “Be Well” family-friendly immune support glycerite, and in my cough syrup recipe. But the real star of the show is “Fire Berry” - named by my kids! - which is an oxymel (an herbal infused vinegar with honey added) that includes elderberries and other immune boosting ingredients. The bonus with Fire Berry is that no refrigeration is necessary, and it lasts for months! By request, I can make elderberry gummies (these are SO GOOD!), or even elderberry cough drops. You can email me at wildrootsmelissa@gmail.com if you have a special request!
