Adaptogens

Adaptogens
are herbs that help the body adapt to stress, support balance in your body, and promote overall well-being. There are lots of ways that your body can benefit from adaptogens!

  1. Stress Response: Adaptogens help the body adapt to various physical, psychological, and environmental stressors. They can help modulate the body's stress response.

  2. Non-Specific Action: Adaptogens are considered non-specific in their action, so they can have a wide range of benefits and support various bodily systems. They are not targeted toward a specific organ/function but instead work to promote overall balance and resilience throughout your body.

  3. Balance: Adaptogens help bring the body back to a state of balance (homeostasis). They can help normalize bodily functions that may have become imbalanced due to stress or other factors.

  4. Enhanced Energy and Vitality: Many adaptogens are associated with increased energy. They can help fight fatigue, plus increase physical and mental performance.

  5. Improved Immune Function: Some adaptogens have immune-modulating properties, helping strengthen the immune system's response to infections and stress.

  6. Support for the Nervous System: Adaptogens can have a calming effect on the nervous system, helping reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.

  7. Enhanced Cognitive Function: Some adaptogens can help improve cognitive function, memory, and mental clarity.

    Examples of Herbal Adaptogens:

    • Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)

    • Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea) *this plant is considered endangered, so while I think it’s got some AMAZING benefits, I generally speaking would not choose to use it at this point.

    • Ginseng (Panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolius)

    • Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum)

    • Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus)

    • Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis)

    • Maca (Lepidium meyenii)

    • Reishi Mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum)

    • Cordyceps Mushroom (Cordyceps sinensis)

Adaptogens are so helpful to take on a regular basis to provide support for your body. I also like to take adaptogens when I’m recovering from a sickness, even if it’s just a little cold, to help my body return to normal. Sometimes it takes a bit to bounce back…adaptogens can help!
