Tincture Talk: Folk Method vs. Mathematical Method
Ever wonder how herbalists turn fresh or dried herbs into potent tinctures? There are two main approaches: the folk method and the mathematical method—and which I use, and why.
The Folk Method
This traditional method is simple and intuitive. You fill a jar with herbs, cover them with alcohol, and let them steep. It’s a great introduction to herbalism and works well for home use, but it doesn’t always produce consistent results.
The Mathematical Method
In this method, I weigh the herbs and carefully calculate the alcohol-to-water ratio to create a tincture with a precise strength. This ensures:
Consistency: Every tincture is just as potent as the last.
Optimal Extraction: Different herbs require different alcohol strengths to extract their unique properties.
Professional Standards: It’s especially important when creating custom formulas for my clients.
Why It Matters
While the folk method works well for casual use, the mathematical method ensures my tinctures are as effective and reliable as possible.
By putting care and precision into my tinctures, I can confidently recommend them to support your health and wellness.
